Chip Drop

How ChipDrop Helped Me Rebuild My Soil & Start My Garden

When it comes to starting a garden, good soil is the foundation of everything. But if you’re like me, working with poor, sandy soil can make it tough to get started. That’s when I found ChipDrop, an incredible service that helps gardeners get free mulch and organic material to enrich their soil.

What is ChipDrop?

ChipDrop is a service that connects gardeners and homeowners with tree services looking to get rid of wood chips, mulch, and other organic materials. Rather than going to a landfill, these materials are delivered straight to your yard—free of charge!

I’ve been using ChipDrop to help me rebuild my soil, and it’s made a huge difference in my backyard garden. Here’s how I used it, step by step.

Delivery #1: The First Mulch Pile

When the first batch of mulch arrived, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But when I saw the size of the pile, I knew I had enough material to kickstart my garden project!

The mulch was a rich mix of leaves, bark, and wood chips, packed with organic material perfect for building up my garden soil. Here’s what I did with it:

  • Layering for Soil Health: I spread the mulch across my garden beds to help retain moisture, reduce weeds, and improve the soil’s structure over time.
  • Starting Compost: I also used the mulch to start a composting base. As it breaks down, it will naturally feed the soil and prepare it for the plants I plan to grow.

Here’s a picture of that first mulch delivery:

Delivery #2: A Second Round of Mulch

A few weeks later, my second mulch delivery came in, and I was ready to put it to use! This batch was a mix of fresh wood chips and shredded bark, which are perfect for improving the texture and fertility of my soil.

I used it in the following ways:

  • Top Dressing for Soil Enrichment: I added the mulch on top of my garden beds to give the soil a nutrient boost and keep it well-covered, helping it retain moisture during the hot Miami days.
  • Creating Walkways: I also used some of it to create walking paths between the garden beds, so I can easily tend to my plants without disturbing the soil.

Check out how the second delivery filled out the garden space:

Before & After: The Garden Transformation

When I started, my garden space was a small, bare patch of land with poor soil. But with the help of ChipDrop’s mulch, I was able to completely transform it into something much more promising.

Here’s a picture of the before shot:

And here’s the after shot—plants are going in, the mulch is breaking down, and the space is coming to life! You can see the difference the mulch made in building healthy soil for planting.
